We tend to think of "fairy tale lives" as being sparkly, perfect, and preciously out-of-touch with the normal hardships of reality. Yet the princesses of the Grimms and even Disney have to deal with such horrible things as dead mothers, injustice, and people trying to kill them.
Kristen Caven's three-act musical, Shoes, a Mirror, and a Big, Pink Rose, weaves together the lives of 3 real women: Ashley, Neve, and Linda, 21st century college pals whose troubles seem to resemble those of Cinderella, Snow White, and Beauty. These good-hearted young women are joined onstage by over-the-top allies and nemeses such as: Harry, Ashley's "fairy" godfather; Clarissa, Neve's psychotic stepmom; and Brutus, Linda's beastly boyfriend. Together, these three friends survive the mythic moments of young adulthood, and face "Happily Ever After" with tongues planted firmly in their knowing cheeks.
